Collectively, we are two, multi-generational, native north county families, who deeply appreciate being a part of this incredible community. Beach Break News is a manifestation of these lives, families, careers, and memories, all intricately interwoven and honored here, using our experiences with the ocean as our common ground.
Betty Steele
To call Betty a globe-trotter would be an understatement. Her sense of adventure has taken her around the world, from hiking through Patagonia to surfing waves off the remote Mentawai Islands.
Betty—who moved from Texas to Leucadia at the age of 18—launched her successful real estate career in 1979 and became a well-respected North County business and community leader. Along with her husband, Pat, she plays an active role in her community: She cofounded the San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the annual Cardiff Surf Classic and Green Beach Fair, both of which serve to bring environmental awareness to San Diego’s beloved coastline. Betty blends her passion for the environment with her real estate know-how by keeping colleagues and clients informed of the latest green-living tips and resources.
Betty is the Founder of Beach Break News. She is our inspiring mother, woman, sister, friend, and grandmother.

Cody Steele
Cody Steele was born at Scripps, La Jolla in 1976 and has been a native San Diego Resident since. He has navigated his way through the Solana Beach School District from Solana Vista Elementary to Torrey Pines High School. Cody finished up his education at Mira Costa & Palomar College with studies in Sociology, Marketing, and Graphic Design. While finishing his education Cody was becoming a surfing sensation and was picked up by a major clothing brand. Cody’s career soon skyrocketed and he was featured on numerous Surfing Magazine Covers while traveling to remote surfing destinations across the world. His professional surfing career spanned a total of nine years.

In 2002, Cody Steele made a career change that would have a profound impact on his life. Cody left the professional surfing circuit to become a Realtor so he could have more stability for himself and his future family. As a second-generation realtor, Cody learned how to handle pressure and how to deal with diverse people. Cody has sold real estate throughout San Diego County, focusing most of his time in North County.
Cody and his wife Aubri have a combined five children, two dogs, one snake, and five chickens…but often can be found hosting (and even raising) a multitude of other kids in their home in Solana Beach. They feel blessed to be the “fun house” and work diligently to foster the relationships among their children, their extended families, their neighbors, and the community at large.
Aubri Steele
Aubri Steele, the newest member of the Steele family, is also a North County native. Aubri attended Encinitas schools all the way through, graduating in 1996 from San Dieguito High School. An alumnus of CSU San Marcos, Aubri earned a bachelors degree and jumped immediately into the commercial real estate world in 2002. Taking a position on the agency side, Aubri worked for years with Cruzan, a local owner and developer of commercial properties.
When Aubri became pregnant with her first child, she left her full time career for a part time teaching position, finally utilizing her degrees and allowing her the flexibility to be at home with the children more. Returning to school after her second child was born, Aubri earned a masters degree in Education and took a position as an adjunct professor at her alma mater, CSU San Marcos, and Mira Costa. Through fourteen years of teaching, Aubri continued to maintain her relationship with her colleagues at Cruzan, contracting her design/marketing services with them through 2013. She is no stranger to juggling multiple careers and kids.
In February of 2019, through a connection from Cruzan, Aubri received an offer to return to full time work in the commercial real estate world. She then made the difficult (but amazing) decision to return to full-time work. Her small office team of four always says, “Like what you do; like who you do it with” and lucky for her, she has landed somewhere she does exactly that.
