4 Steps to Reset

How to reset your relationship with Nature

The research supporting the benefits of nature continues to grow, and with the rise of screen time and the challenges of the attention economy we anticipate seeing a lot more "nature prescriptions". Of course, one of the best things about a "nature prescription" is that there aren't any side effects. It’s amazing how much we're willing to put up with when it comes to our more traditional medications for things like anxiety, depression, ADHD, hypertension.

It's helpful to open ourselves up to the idea that nature is medicine and can be taken in doses but the main takeaway is that any amount of nature time is great. Getting a dose of DNA (Daily Nature Adventure) is one of the most necessary things a person can do to live a healthy, happy, and well-balanced life. For us, this is right up there with eating well, getting adequate sleep, exercising, and all the other things we know help us thrive day to day.

Here are 4 steps to help you reset your relationship with nature and get all the benefits time outside can offer:

STEP 1: Take Nature Breaks

In as little as 5 minutes outside, you'll start to feel a boost in positive emotions. Recommended dose: At least once a day

STEP 2: Get your DNA (Daily Nature Adventure)

Spending 15 minutes in nature decreases your cortisol (the stress hormone) levels by about 17%. Recommended Dose: At least once a day.

STEP 3: Go on ENU Adventures

90 - 120 minutes outside in nature can significantly reduce depressive symptoms and negative emotions and improve overall physical health and psychological wellbeing. Recommended Dose: Once a week.

STEP 4: Commit to 3 Days Every 3 Months

The "Three Day Effect," which happens after spending three days in nature, increases creative thinking and problem solving skills by almost 50%. Recommended Dose: Three days every three months

How-To Go On ENU Adventures!

First you need to find a couple of hours on your calendar to Experience Nature Unplugged (ENU) and go on a mini adventure. These adventures should be just different enough from your daily routine that they create excitement and energy around the experience. They can be relatively short, easy, local, and cheap without skimping on the fun. Adventures can take many forms and are often refreshing, rewarding, relaxing or challenging. Think about a campfire dinner in your backyard, driving to the mountains or beach to watch a sunset, games in the park, or finding a new local trail to explore. When we can find 90 - 120 minutes on our calendars for nature adventures every week, we're actively managing negative emotions, reducing depressive symptoms and improving overall physical and psychological health.
