beyond education

With kids home from school, many parents are struggling to keep their children entertained and educated. This incredible 12-year old boy, took education into his own hands, and ended up learning lessons you just can't get in any school. Below is the interview with this tweenage entrepreneur:

I kept experimenting with my recipes and started delivering to neighbors to brighten their quarantine time.  I found myself constantly talking about baking ideas with my two friends on bike rides.  I finally decided that I could build a baking business out of it.  I asked my friends to join because their families were urging them to do the same thing.  I had also been talking with my mom about how I could do more to help local families in need during this time and figured I could possibly make enough to donate a percentage of my proceeds to that.  I’m good with technology, knew how to make a logo in Illustrator, and liked the idea of building a website - so I started there. Within the first 10 days, I had 25 orders.

3. What has the response been like?

The response has been overwhelmingly good.  Everyone has been amazed by our service and quality of goods.  My brown butter chocolate chip cookie has became pretty popular, as well as our breads.

4. What avenues are you using to drive sales?

We started by reaching out to close friends of family.  They loved it, and then a couple of my mom’s friends posted pictures on Instagram which inspired me to create an Instagram page for the company for people to tag.  Then it blew up.  I think the fact that we have a full-working website, it was easy for customers to see our products and make an order.  And, we advertise that we deliver fresh-baked goods to your door - which everyone needs right now.

5. Have your parents helped you at all, and if so, how?

My parents have been very supportive.  They have helped me understand the financials and marketing, and have assisted me in the kitchen... but have also let me make mistakes and create my own path with the business.

6. What have you learned from this experience that you might not be learning in school right now?

There have been MANY things I’ve learned from this, including important life lessons that I know I’ll use in my future.  I’ve learned more about finance than I ever have before. I’ve learned how to relate to customers, a lot about marketing strategies, cost-analysis, problem-solving skills, time-management, and how to work as a team.  I’ve even had an experience where a misunderstanding led to an unhappy customer, and I learned that you just can’t always please everyone.

7. What would you consider the most difficult part of running a business to be?

Time-management, for sure.  Coordinating with the rest of the team to get fresh orders out on time has been the biggest challenge.

8. What is your favorite part of this experience?

I’ve really enjoyed gaining and working with new customers, and getting positive feedback.

9. Do you have any advice for other young entrepreneurs?

Jump right in!  Start small or start big - it doesn’t matter, there are many ways to grow.  Don’t spend too long dreaming about it.  Start building it!

2. How did you decide to start this business?

When the Covid quarantine began, I started baking for my family because I was finishing my schoolwork so quickly.

We all know that innovation never came from being comfortable. Some of the best things to come from the COVID-19 quarantine, are the things we've learned to harvest at home. Here at Riolito Farms, we're busting at the seams with fresh chicken eggs, avocados, oranges, peaches, lemons, limes, and tangerines. Within the coming months, we'll include apples, apricots, blueberries, blackberries, and more.

But, it's not just the food we're cultivating during stay-at-home orders. The kids have started their own soap making company, skateboard deck design company, and baking company. All goods are available for purchase in our store, or can be found via links therein.

This column will include recipes, activities, and tidbits of valuable information to harvest your own goods, food, and fun, in your home. Enjoy!!

Meet THELMA, named after the escape-driven character in the classic film, Thelma & Louise. She is our smallest chicken, but has the biggest personality. Thelma drinks from the dogs' water bowl, and comes running over to hang out any time people are present. She enjoys being pet, just like the dogs. But that's not what makes Thelma so (in)famous.

Every morning around 5am, Thelma flees the coop for greener pastures. We know because she's often caught on our Ring cam, sauntering past the front door. We're not entirely sure where she goes, although we've seen photographs of her on other people's social media posts, so we are sure of one thing... this chicken crosses the road because she has a social life much more exciting than our own. Should you come across our fine-feathered fugitive, please tag us @beachbreaknews.

In case you're wondering, yes, she's green. We added a little food coloring to our flock to track them and monitor their behavior. It usually fades in a week or two, but Thelma's already submitted complaints that it doesn't match her shoes.
